Rotavirus infections typically impact children under the age of five. When infected, the Rotavirus causes watery stools (diarrhea). Rotavirus spreads easily, but maintaining strong sanitation procedures around the home can help slow the spread. Most Rotavirus infections can be treated at home with plenty of rest and fluids. However, more serious cases can cause severe dehydration and hospitalization. The Rotavirus vaccine can lessen infection symptoms or even prevent the infection altogether.

The Case For the Vaccine

Rotavirus spreads easily between children. However, research estimates indicate that nine out of ten children who get vaccinated against Rotavirus are protected against severe strains of the ailment. Research also indicates that seven out of ten children will be protected from the disease entirely, cutting down on the number of cases seen and related hospitalizations. Each year, the vaccine helps prevent an estimated 40,000 – 50,000 child hospitalizations.

The Case Against the Vaccine

Concerns surrounding the Rotavirus vaccine center around specific vaccine provider’s immunization. RotaTeq, Merck & Co.’s Rotavirus vaccine, utilizes tip caps containing natural rubber latex in its prefilled oral applicators. This presents a true issue for children who have a latex allergy. Other options are available from other distributors. Another concern raised is the current vaccine’s effectiveness, with some reports indicating that the vaccine may not protect against all strains.

Conclusion

Research indicates an overall effective vaccine. Hospitalizations have decreased since the introduction of the virus. However, if the current vaccine does not adequately protect against new strains, improvements may be needed. Additionally, parents should be sure to read the package insert and understand allergic reaction factors before deciding to vaccinate their child.
